Significant Buildings and Places

On your walk around the town, you will notice buildings interesting both due to their architectonic features and their history. There is the Art Nouveau Hernych Villa, the grammar school decorated with relievos or the functionalist Roškot Theatre, which is widely acknowledged by experts and listed as a national cultural monument. The oldest preserved building is the seat of the Unity of the Brethren. A perfect blend of the old with the new is found in the town library building. A true gem among the town’s historical sites are the baroque Assumption of Virgin Mary Church and the adjacent deanery with splendid arcades and gardens. Many personalities in the field of architecture, building, sculpture and handicraft have left their marks in the town, such as Kamil Roškot, Quido Kocián, Jan Pacl, Josef Mařatka, Josef Drahoňovský, Jakub Pánek and others. Some buildings have retained their original function, others now serve different purposes than those they had been built for.
