Just as everywhere else, in Ústí nad Orlicí there have always been many sports enthusiasts – both recreational and competitive. The origins of this tradition can be traced back to the first half of the 20th century. Swimmers were the first to take advantage of the Tichá Orlice river not only to bathe there, but also to start building an outdoor swimming pool in this area in 1933. Over the years, the surrounding flat meadows became the place for an athletic stadium with tennis courts. All this laid foundation for today’s sports centre, which rightly deserves to be denoted as “top-class”.
These days, there is a modern outdoor swimming pool with high-quality equipment and numerous possibilities for active relaxation. To name just a few examples, these include the 101-metre-long water slide, the children’s zone, the barrier free access and refreshment stalls. Over time, the stadium with courts became renowned for the clay surface across the whole country. Multiple times a year, there are various national and regional tournaments held. The local clay tracks and courts have hosted some extraordinary sportswomen, such as the athlete Zuzana Hejnová, the tennis player Petra Kvitová or the javelin thrower Barbora Špotáková. Today, the sports centre comprises three football pitches: Two with natural grass and one with a third-generation artificial turf. The athletic stadium with a tartan track is comparable to other top-class stadiums not only in the Czech Republic. The modernised sauna and ice rink deserve mentioning, too. In summer months, the ice rink can be used for inline skating or Bandy hockey. Another part of the whole facility is the hotel Sporthotel Tichá Orlice. Apart from the hotel services, the visitors are free to use the perfectly equipped fitness or the starting point of the cycling routes next to the hotel.
Ústí nad Orlicí offers a wide range of sports and leisure activities. Traditional sports events attract not only their participants, but also spectators from all of the Czech Republic as well as from abroad.
Over the years, the town became renowned for the international uphill car race “Ústecká 21”. In winter, there is the international downhill skiing race for youth “Skiinterkriterium” organized by the Skiklub association in Říčky v Orlických horách.
A wide range of sporting opportunities for all generations is available during the summer festival “Město v pohybu – týden dobré pohody” (roughly “Town in Motion”).
It is not only through popular events that the town gains publicity (both national and international). Many exceptional sportsmen and sportswomen who were born here make a fair contribution as well. The biker Jaroslav Kulhavý won a gold medal in the 2012 Olympic Games in London and Lukáš Novák is the Europe and world champion in fire-fighting sport. Back in his days, Václav Čevona, the multiple times republic champion in 1,500-metre run, brought the town a lot of fame by winning the fourth place at the 1948 Olympic Games in London.
